It is said the Goonan surname "O'Gamhnain", meaning "Calf Keeper", and the present clan, are descendant from one of Brian Boru's 11 brothers.

Brian, in his twenties, succeeded as King after his eldest brother Mahon, who succeeded their father Cennedi as King, was assassinated by Malloy of Desmond. Brian then went on to the history books and did what no one ever had done before - he united all of Ireland and they lived in peace during most of his reign until he was killed on Good Friday in the Battle of Clontarf along with his son Morrough in 1014 AD.

The area of their rule was in Munster, the area now know as County Clare.
